A day may come, when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of Fellowship, but it is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields when the age of men comes crashing down! But it is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you, stand, men of the West!" ~ Aragorn
"How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand there is no going back. There are some things that time can not mend. Some hurts that go too deep...that have taken hold..." ~ Frodo
Lord of the Rings people!! (with the odd thing that is most certainly not a person...) =D Those of you who know me even slightly will be surprised at the lack of Smeagol images...

SMEAGOL!!!!
FRODO
Elijah Wood
Bilbo left Frodo the One Ring, and Frodo took it to Rivendell. He was followed by Ringwraiths, and stabbed by the Witchking on Weathertop. Frodo was rescued by Glorfindel (or Arwen in the movie... grrrr...), and finally came to Rivendell, where he was healed by Elrond. At the Council of Elrond, Frodo volunteered to take the Ring and destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom. After Boromir tried to take the Ring by force, Frodo fled the from Fellowship, accompanied only by his faithful gardener, Sam. Gollum, tracked Frodo through the rocks of the Emyn Muil, but Frodo got Gollum to lead them through the Dead Marshes. Gollum led the hobbits faithfully until they came to Cirith Ungol. There he betrayed them to Shelob, who temporarily paralysed Frodo. Sam rescued him from the orcs who had captured him, and continued to accompany him to Mount Doom. When they got there, Frodo claimed the ring, but Gollum, who had followed them all the way, bit off Frodo's finger that had the Ring on it and he fell into the fires (noooooooooo!!!). After the War of the Ring, Frodo passed over the sea to the Grey Havens.
Best quote: "How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand there is no going back. There are some things that time can not mend. Some hurts that go too deep...that have taken hold"
SAM
Sean Astin
Kinda pathetic, yet also kinda sweet. Frodos gardener. He was caught eavesdropping on a conversation between Gandalf and Frodo about the Ring and was told to go with Frodo to Bree. He later agreed (or maybe that's the wrong word...) to go with Frodo on the quest "Mr Frodo's not going anywhere without me!" Lol! Elronds face! It was partly thanks to him that the quest was successful as he saved Frodo from Shelobs lair. He also supported Frodo all the way to mount Doom. He later married Rosie Cotton and had 13 children. After Rosie died, Sam went to the Grey Havens - the last of the Ring Bearers.
Best quote: "Don't leave me here alone! Don't go where I can't follow..." Either sweet or pathetic, haven't decided yet...
PIPPIN
Billy Boyd
Brilliant character, acted by a brilliant actor, with a brilliant accent! He rocks! His story is kinda different in the book and film, so I'll stick with the film. Him and Merry run into Frodo and Sam whilst stealing some of Farmer Maggots crops. He was a member of the Fellowship due to him insisting that he'd follow them anyway no matter what. He was captured by the Uruk Hai, in spite of Boromir trying to save them (dying in the process :'( ). Pippin managed to free himself and Merry while the orcs were distracted by the sudden arrival of the Riders of Rohan. They ran into Fangorn Forrest where they were found by Treebeard. He pledged his service to te evil Denethor and became a knight of Gondor. Oh, and he saved Faramirs life! :D Oops, almost forgot, he looked into the Palantir and saw "a glimpse of the enermys plan", which was the reason they went to Minas Tirith in the first place. But yes, he's a veeeeery cool character and we loves him precious!
Best quote: "Anyways, you need people of intelligence on this sort of... mission... quest... thing."
MERRY
Dominic Monaghan
Just as brilliant as Pippin, though his accent isn't quite as cool! Merry, along with Pippin, was captured by the Uruk-hai, but he managed to escape, thanks to Pippin cutting his bonds with the knife of a dead orc. The hobbits both escaped into Fangorn Forest. After Pippin and Gandalf rode off to Minas Tirith, Merry offered his sword to King Theoden and became the king's esquire. Merry disobeyed Theoden's command to stay in Rohan, and rode with Eowyn. Merry fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where he assisted Eowyn in killing the Witchking. After the War of the Ring, he returned to the Shire and fought as one of the commanders in the Battle of Bywater (book).
Best quote: "Oh! I think I've broken something *produces carrot*"
GIMLI
John Rhys-Davies
Soooooo funny! I have no idea what made Peter Jackson decide to change him so much, but I thought it was brill! Another member of the Fellowship and funny from the beginning "Well, what are we waiting for? *tries to break ring with axe resulting in a broken axe and him lying on the floor*" Gimli traveled to Rivendell with his father to seek council as to what should be done about the servants of the Enemy who asked the Dwarves for news of Shire and Baggins. In the film he offers his help to Frodo at the Council of Elrond, but in the books he's appointed by Elrond. He formed an unlikely, but very amusing friendship with Legolas after Gandalf fell. And two more important facts... Dwarves are bad long distance runners, but "very dangerous over short distances" and Gimli killed 42 orcs at the battle of Helms Deep!
Best quote: "That still only counts as one!"
LEGOLAS
Orlando Bloom
A very cool character, despite my feelings on Orlando Bloom. He enters the story at the Council of Elrond and is instantly liked either for his looks *rolls eyes* or the amazing way he stands up for Aragorn! =D "This is Aragorn, son of Arathorn, you owe him your allegiance!" His shooting is amazingly cool (or as Jeni is saying, stupendous!). His lack of emotions I don't think he is to blame for, seeing as he is an elf, so you can't exactly imagine him in floods of tears or jumping about squealing with excitement (as amusing as that image is...). He stays loyal to the Fellowship and forms a brilliant (and often VERY amusing) friendship with Gimli, the best part DEFINITELY being him killing the Mumakil and everything on it, coming down and Gimli saying "That only counts as one!" Haha!! His "I'm cool" look cracks me up every time, but hey, he's a brill character so I'll let him off.
Best quote: "Shall I describe it to you? Or would you like me to find you a box?"
BOROMIR
Sean Bean
He is so sweet, and makes the end of the Fellowhip of the Ring so sad, even though you were expecting it the whole time. He is the son of Denethor (evl) and brother of Faramir (yay!). He was next in the line of stewards. Denethor chose Boromir to go to Rivendell, and when Boromir arrived there after a long journey, he was chosen to represent the race of Men in the Fellowship, along with Aragorn. Boromir never really understood that the Ring could only be used for evil purposes, nor did he acknowledge Aragorn as heir to the throne of Gondor until the very end of his life. Boromir pleaded with Frodo to lend him the Ring, and when Frodo wouldn't, Boromir tried to take it by force. Frodo put on the Ring and disappeared, leaving Boromir to realize what he had said and done. Boromir redeemed himself by trying to defend the hobbits Merry and Pippin, but the Uruk-hai were too many, and Boromir was pierced by many arrows. Merry and Pippin were captured, and Boromir, believing he had failed them. It was so sad!
Best quote: "I would have followed you to the end, my brother... my captain... my King..."
GANDALF
Sir Ian McKellen
Gandalf huh? The White Rider, Mithrandir, Gandalf the Grey, Gandalf the White, Gandalf Stormcrow - call him what you will - he rocks!!! Well, where to begin... ah yes, concerning....gandalf (no extract from Bilbo intended of course...) Now you have to admit, he has got some lean, mean, wizardry fighting machine moves (for an 8000+ old man) He is without a shadow of a doubt, my favourite cloaked in white, after falling through fire - and water and then casting the balrog's ruin upon the mountain side. A true leader no matter what and lets no beat around the bush but, he gave Denethor what he deserved - a thrashing with a staff! Last thought - boy, if anyone can ride an eagle - he can!
Best quote: "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!"
ARAGORN
Viggo Mortenson
Probably one of my favourite characters, he is soooooo cool! And I have to say the greasy hair really suits him! All of his different stages are brill, Strider, his normal Aragorn stage, then King of Gondor (though we perhaps wonder at this stage how on earth he has a semi-career as a singer...). When Arathorn, Aragorn's father, died when Aragorn was young, his mother (Gilraen I think...) took him to Rivendell, where he was raised by Elrond. There, at the age of 20, Aragorn fell in love with Arwen. We are introduced to him at Bree as Strider, then at the council of Elrond, he offers Frodo his sword and joins the fellowship. :D His best part is without a doubt at the Black Gates (the best part of the whole trilogy!), when he risks his life for Frodo.
Best quote: "Sons of Rohan, of Gondor, my brothers. I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me. A day may come when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, but that is not this day! An hour of wolves and shattered shields before the age of men comes crashing down, but that is not this day! This day we fight! By all that you hold dear on this good earth, I bid you stand! Men of the West!"
SARUMAN
Christopher Lee
Saruman the White was the chief of the Istari and considered to be the wisest of all. He was appointed to the head of the White Council. Saruman delved deep into the lore of the Rings of power, and all arts concerning Sauron. He did not have evil intentions from the start, but as he gained more knowledge, he saw that he himself could become a power, and have dominion over all others. Saruman offered to guard the circle of Isengard for the men of Gondor, and his offer was gratefully accepted. Saruman took up his abode there, and looked into the palantir of Orthanc. He became ensnared by Sauron, and, though he believed his ideas of breeding orcs and turning the once majestic circle of Isengard into a poisonous slum were his own, his ideas were only a child's mockery of the power of Mordor. Gandalf rode to him seeking counsel after learning that Frodo possessed the One Ring. Saruman told Gandalf to join with Sauron, as he had, but Gandalf refused, and Saruman imprisoned him on top of Orthanc. Gandalf was rescued by Gwaihir. Grima returned to Saruman. Saruman sent Uruk-hai to Helm's Deep. Saruman's army was defeated, and some of the Rohirrim rode to Isengard, with Gandalf at their head, to confront Saruman. Saruman tried to persuade them that he had done no wrong, but Gandalf was not ensnared and, breaking Saruman's staff, cast him out of the order of the Wizards. After the War of the Ring, Treebeard let Saruman out of Orthanc. Saruman headed to the Shire, which he turned into a small version of Isengard. Frodo confronted Saruman, who tried to stab Frodo. Frodo's mithril coat turned the blow, and Saruman continued on his way. Grima finally turned upon his master and slit his throat, but in turn was killed by hobbit archers.
Best quote: "It would be wise, my friend."
ARWEN
Liv Tyler
Amazing in the Fellowship of the Ring, but I have to say, my opinion of her goes down a lot in The Two Towers and even Return of the King, she seems to have no role at all, but is in it all the time. To me that makes no sense, but then romance has never really been my favourite thing... though she is an elf, which is enough to make me jealous. She was born in TA 241 to Elrond Halfelven Celebrian. She met Aragorn in the woods of Rivendell, and I think the rest is obvious. She had the choice to stay in Middle Earth with Aragorn, forsaking her immortality, or to go to the undying lands, in my opinion she made the wrong choice, but makes it more interesting. Arwen died the winter after Aragorn.
Best quote: "Nin o Chithaeglir, lasto beth daer, Rimmo nin Bruinen dan in Ulaer!"
ELROND
Hugo Weaving
Elrond had the choice between becoming a human or an elf and obviously chose to be an elf, Elros, his twin brother, chose to become a human (no idea why...). In the last Alliance, Elrond was the herald for Gil-Galad. He married Celebrian and they had 3 children, the twins Elrohir and Elladan, and Arwen. After the war of the Ring, Elrond passes over the sea, after being revealed as bearer of Vilya, the Ring of Sapphire. And a little fact I've just found out... although he is called Elrond Half-elven, he is actually 5/8 elven and 3/8 human... fascinating huh?
Best quote: "Men... men are weak"
GALADRIEL
Cate Blanchett
Daughter of Finarfin and Earwen. She married Celeborn and they had 1 daughter, Celebrian (Elronds mother). She met the Fellowship in Lothlorien and gave each member a gift when they were leaving. After the War of the Ring, she goes to the Grey Havens. She is the bearer of Nenya which she uses to maintain Lorien. She is the only elf that owned th Ring for the whole of its existance.
Best quote: "I amar prestar aen. Han mathon ne nen. Han mathon ne chae. A han nostron ned wilith."
GOLLUM
Andy Serkis (=D)
The coolest character in the whole trilogy! He is described as "a force of evil"... but I find this insulting seeing as Denethor is put as "a force of light" *shakes head in disbelief*. He joins Frodo and Sam in the Two Towers far from his own will, but soon becomes fond of Frodo, "Master is our friend!". Though he seems a little less keen on Sam, "Stupid fat hobbit!". As the trilogy goes on, he becomes more and more tempted by the ring, evenutally leading him to listening to the Gollum side of him, and resorting to Shelob (which may I remind you, he is not to blame for! He is corrupted, which is also not his fault, as anyone would be in the circumstances! Well, except for perhaps Frodo, but he's just weird..). His story goes on, to ...) a truly devastating end, him falling into the fires of Mount Doom, but that isn't to say he didn't have his bit of fun beforehand with Frodos finger... and also, he dies happy, which is a comfort for me at least... Oh and one last thing to say, Andy Serkis is SUCH a dude!! I strongly suggest you all meet him! See pics! He rocks!
Best quote: Oh the choices... "And they doesn't taste very nice does they precious?" or... "Cold be heart and hand and bone, cold be travellers far from home. They do not see what lies ahead when sun has failed and moon is dead"
BILBO
Ian Holm
A classy little bloke, though admittedly rather creepy at times. I have heard him called"cute" at the end of Return of the King, though this is only by some poor, mislead girl named Frankie whos logic none have ever dared to question. "Frodo, any chance of seeing that old ring of mine again? The one I gave you...", "Sorry, uncle...I'm afraid I lost it." When he was 50, Gandalf convinced him to travel with a company of dwarves, to be their burglar. On this journey he won a riddle contest against Gollum and found the Ring. The films started with a party celebrating Bilbos 111th birthday and Frodo's 33rd, in which Bilbo did a farewell speech before putting on the ring and disappearing. He went to Rivendell (after finally leaving the ring to Frodo) and stays there through the War of the Ring. Bilbo passed over the sea with Frodo at the end of the films.
Best quote: "I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."
THEODEN
Bernard Hill
The King of Rohan. He took Eomer and Eowyn in when their parents died. He had a man called Grima in his service, who everyone (except Theoden) called Wormtongue. He was supposedly the Kings councelor, but instead was in the service of Saruman so weakened Theoden. Gandalf healed Theoden and advised him to stand and fight, but instead they fled to Helms Deep. Thanks to Haldir and the rest of the elves, they win the battle of Helms Deep. He later lead his armies to Minas Tirith and they fought in the Battle of Pelennor Fields, where he was killed by the Witchking. *sob sob*
Best quote:"Spears shall be shaken, shields shall be splintered! A sword day...a red day...and the sun rises! Ride now...Ride now...Ride! Ride for ruin and the world's ending!"
EOMER
Karl Urban
This is possibly the only character i was disappointed with at some point, but as his role went on, he got better and better and now I think he's great! =D He's the Cheif Marshal of the Mark. He and Eowyn were raised by Theoden after his Father died when he was only 11 and his mother died of grief soon after. Grima always hated him, so when Eomer disregarded his orders to stay in Edoras (when he killed the uruks and met Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli), Grima had Eomer and his riders banished from Rohan. Another place where the book and films differ, in the books, Eomer fights alongside Aragorn at Helms Deep, but in the film, he comes with Aragorn at the rising of the sun. Eomer fought in the last battle before the Black Gates of Mordor.
Best quote: "I would cut off your head, Dwarf, if it stood but a little higher from the ground."
EOWYN
Miranda Otto
Wow! She rocks! An amazing rider and fighter, but she has to go into disguise to really prove this, as the women of Rohan aren't allowed to fight. She fell in love with Aragorn practically the moment she saw him. When the Riders of Rohan are going to the battle of Pelenor Fields, she disuises herself and rides with them (taking Merry with her). She fought AMAZINGLY. She stands by Theoden when all of his guards have fled in terror, and with the help of Merry, she kills the Witchking. She meets Faramir in the Houses of Healing and they get married soon after.
Best quote: Cheesy but... "I am no man!"
WORMTONGUE
Brad Dourif
He came into the service of Saruman, and became counsellor to Theoden. He weakened Theoden and convinced him that Eomer and Gandalf could not be trusted. Grima's plans started to go downhill as soon as Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli came to Edoras. Gandalf healed Theoden and Theoden threw Grima out of Edoras (quite literally...). Grima returned to Saruman. After the War of the Ring, Treebeard let Saruman and Grima out of Orthanc. By then, Grima had become Saruman's grovelling slave. He followed Saruman to the Shire, but when Frodo, Sam, Pippin, and Merry returned and defeated Saruman's men, Grima finally snapped and he slit Saruman's throat. He tried to run away, but fell dead with several hobbit arrows in his back.
Best quote: "Oh! But you are alone! Who knows what you have spoken to the darkness. In bitter watches of the night. When all your life seems to shrink. The walls of your bower closing in about you."
FARAMIR
David Wenham
One of the sweetest characters in the film. Denethor is forever looking down on him, but he remains loyal and wonderful and brilliant! While Boromir was on his journey away west, Faramir was appointed Captain of Gondor in his stead. When Denethor found out that Boromir had dies, he was blinded by grief and sent Faramir on a hopeless as well as senseless mission to Osgiliath, which was already occupied by Orcs. Faramir made it back to the city with only several surviving comrades (he is the only survivor in the film). Denethor said that Faramir was dead and intended to burn both of them. He is saved by Gandalf and Pippin, and when he is in the house of Healing, he falls in love with Eowyn, they were later married.
Best quote: "So you wish now that our places had been exchanged? That I had died and Boromir had lived" "Since you were robbed of Boromir, I will do what I can in his stead. If I return, think better of me father" (Love Faramir, despise Denethor! Evil! Cruel!)
DENETHOR
John Noble
I hate this man!! Truely despise him! Trying to combine the book and films, it would go something like this... He's the son of Ecthelion II and Steward of Gondor, and put the safety of his homeland above all else. Disregarding any advice from Gandalf, he soon fell to pride ad conceit (yuck!! I sound like I'm writing about Pride and Prejudice or something...). He considered Gandalf "a bearer of ill-tidings" and would never pay attention to him, even if a lot more than his pride was at stake. Denethor got annoyed with Faramir because of him interest in the lore of Gandalf. Although Denethor only intended good, his pride (we despises him precious...) got the better of him and he thought he had the stength to look into the Palantir. He was shown visions of the enermies armies, which made him go insane, evenutally killing him and nearly Faramir. Luckily, Gandalf and Pippin got there in time! :D
Best quote: Following Faramirs quotes... "That depends on the manner of your return!" (Kill him!! Diiiiiiiie!)
HALDIR
Craig Parker
Such a dude! Envy Emily and Hannah so much for meeting him! An elf who lived in Lothlorien. He meets the Fellowship there in the Fellowship of the Ring. In the Two Towers, he practically begs Galadriel and Celeborn to let him lead an army of elves to Helms Deep, which he does (FAB moment!! See quote!). However, although they help looooooads, it results in possibly the saddest death in the trilogy.
Best quote: "An alliance once existed between elves and men. Long ago we fought and died together. We come to honour that allegiance."
TREEBEARD
John Rhys-Davies
Fist things first, he is NOT a tree! He is a tree herder, a shepherd of the forest! He is the oldest of the Ents and finds Merry and Pippin in Fangorn forest. He first thought that they were "little orcs". After finding out what Saruman had done to an area of Fangorn, he got angry and the Ents go to war! It's brilliant... Isengard doesn't stand a chance! In the books, Treebeard can't bare to see a living creature imprisoned, so lets Saruman out, thinking he can do no more damage, but he turns out to be quite wrong. His elvish name is Fangorn.

SAURON
Voice by Sala Baker
Sauron was a servant of Melkor, the first Dark Lord. When Melkor was conquered and imprisoned, Sauron was not caught, and stayed in hiding, biding his time. He came to the island of Numenor, where the ancestors of Aragorn lived, and counselled the kings not to put their trust in the Valar (the high angels), but in Melkor, who was more powerful and one day would rise again. The kings of Numenor listened to Sauron, and the people of Numenor tried to sail to Valinor to gain immortality by force. The Valar caused a great flood, and the ships of Numenor sank, and the island of Numenor was flooded. Fortunately, Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anarion escaped to Middle-earth, along with those who were still faithful to the Valar. Sauron next went to the Elves, and learned the art of making Rings of power. He made the One Ring to rule them all, and into it he poured all his power, malice, and cruelty. The Ring could only be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom, the very fires where it had been forged. The Elves were immediately aware of its existence, and hid the Rings that they had made. Sauron built up his fortresses in the Mordor, the land of shadow. He gave Rings of power to nine mortal kings, who were corrupted and became Sauron's slaves, the Nazgul. Sauron planned to enslave the world, but Elendil, king of Men, and Gil-galad, king of Elves, formed an alliance of Elves and Men and that army fought Sauron on the very slopes of the Mountain of Fire. Elendil and Isildur threw Sauron down, but they themselves were killed. Isildur son of Elendil cut the One Ring off of Sauron's hand, and had the chance right then to destory both the Ring and Sauron, but he couldn't bring himself to. He paid with his life. Sauron's spirit lived on, though he was now only able to take the shape of a great eye, lidless, ever-watchful, wreathed in flame. Sauron hunted long for the Ring, which would give him dominion over the earth, but Frodo and Sam cast the Ring into Mount Doom and destroyed Sauron forever.
RINGWRAITHS
They were once great kings of men, but were corrupted when Sauron gave to them nine rings of power. They became the Nazgul (A.k.a. Ringwraiths, The Nine, Black Riders, Fell Riders). Invisible, but generally wear black robes to give shape to their... nothingness. They ride black horses that were bred in Mordor. They (stating the obvious I know...) "never stop hunting" Frodo, and the Witchking stabs him at Weathertop. Later, the Witchking leads the Armies of Mordor at Minas Tirith, but then Eowyn kills him! :D The other Ringwraiths were destroyed at the same time as Sauron, when the Ring was destroyed.
